Last night Jeff, Myself and the photobooth were lost in The Woods with HTC for their Holiday Party. The Woods is a great little dance venue above Grims and The Butterfly Lounge on Capital Hill in Seattle. The HTC team was definitely frisky and festive celebrating the 2011 holiday season. Why do they rock, you might ask? Because of the 16+ years of support and guidance they have provided youth of Seattle. The Service Board helps kids build self-knowledge, skills, courage, and determination. They provide life changing experiences through an ethic of public service and snowboarding! The Soirée is an annual fundraiser to help make this happen. Last night was a huge success, thanks to all the supporters! Find out where you can support TSB family here!

A huge thank you to everyone who attended the opening reception of "Breaking the Cycle of Poverty in the Ixil", Friday, March 4th at evo's Times Infinity Gallery in Seattle. The exhibition featured photo essays from a July, 2010, self funded, citizen journalism mission with SalaamGarage to the Ixil Area of Guatemala, documenting efforts being made by Agros International to break the cycle of poverty there. The seven, self-funded, citizen journalists visited 3 villages that Agros supports and interviewed several families and community leaders to share stories of success from these war torn areas.

During the reception Sean Dimond, Director of Communications for Agros, spoke briefly sharing painful yet heartwarming stories of what the indigenous peoples of the Ixil face daily. While thanking the citizen journalists of SalaamGarage, he also encouraged everyone to praise the subjects of the show for their strength and determination in building a sustainable life and community in Guatemala. Amanda Koster, founder of SalaamGarage, also spoke thanking the people of the Ixil, Agros, and the journalist team, for trusting the mission of SalaamGarage.

The companion book, “Guatemala + Agros, Stories from Seven Citizen Journalists,” is available for purchase online through Blurb (A SalaamGarage partner) here.

All the exhibition prints are available for purchase at evo. All proceeds from the sale of prints and the book go to Agros. Blurb will also donate an additional $1 for every book purchased.

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, February 8th 2011 – A 7-person citizen journalism team, facilitated by SalaamGarage and Agros International, two Seattle-based non-profits organizations, will show over 30 photos depicting the lives of indigenous Mayan people in Guatemala throughout March at evo store in Fremont.

Opening reception will be on Friday March 4th 2011, at evo's Times Infinity Gallery in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood (122 NW 36th St, Seattle WA), as part of Fremont's First Friday Art Walk. The show will run throughout March. Admission is free. Refreshment will be available, thanks to the donation by local businesses.

During the reception at 8pm, there will be a short talk by SalaamGarage founder Amanda Koster, Agros International Director of Communications, Sean Diamond and a question-and-answer session with the journalists. The journalists will also present their recently published book: "Guatemala + Agros, Stories from Seven Citizen Journalists."

The journalist team, including 5 Seattle residents, 1 from New York and 1 from California, visited the war-torn Ixil area of Guatemala in the summer of 2010 and interviewed two dozen families in three villages. Through their photos, the team aims to provides an opportunity for Seattleites to better understand and appreciate the lives and the resiliency of the Mayan people.

The visit made a deep impression to all the team members."I was surprised by how little real poverty I saw. The villagers I met were proud and seemed to want very little. The only desire that was universal was to have enough money to send their children to school," said Phebe Sorensen, the 83-year old Great Grandma, one of the seven journalists.

All proceeds from book and photo sales will benefit Agros International and support their work in Central America, empowering the people living in the margin to break the cycle of poverty.

My life has been changed forever...all new perspectives on the way we live our life. Amazing 2 days visiting Agros villages of Belen and La Esperanza in the Ixil area of Guatemala. So much to tell you when I return as now I must get rest for another inspirational and emotional day. Words cannot describe this experience.

Guatemala - 1st 4 days

First 4 days in Guatemala went very well! Very busy and little time for posting. We have gotten to see a lot around Antigua and hiked the Picaya Volcano that Blew up 2 months ago and talked with the locals about amazing stories of survival in the village at the trail head about red hot boulders flying into their homes. We have been eating amazing food recommended by the Agros staff we are working with here and meeting lots of amazing people. Just drove 6 hours to Najab into the highlands and will meet the first village tomorrow to share the stories of success in their communities. Learning new spanish dialects and making friends with Parrots! So much more to chat about but I have to be up at 6:00 for a VERY busy day working with the first village of Belen in the Ixil Triangle. Road trip to Vermont!

This past week Jenn and I embarked on a 3060 mile road trip to
Vermont. The goal: Get Cedar, Obie and our new dog JuJu back to
Vermont while Jenn is there visiting with family and I go on my
mission to Guatemala. We did this once before, 15 yrs ago when we
moved to Seattle from Vermont so it was a journey of the heart and
soul. I'll be damned if we are gone for 3+ weeks and our dogs are
sitting alone 8hrs a day and with a dogsitter the rest of the time
when they could be back HOME in Vermont enjoying the beach on Lake
Champlain and visiting with family. So that was what we did! It was
a test on our emotions and our physical state but in the end all went
very well. Next time, mandatory hotel every night! We made the drive
in 65 hours with about 8-10 hours of stop time!! Here are some images
from the start, the way, and the glorious finish. I could not be more
happy to have Cedar spend what possibly could her last summer, due to
cancer, enjoying all Vermont has to offer!! This time will help her
push through and hopefully be back next summer!! Big thanks to Jenn
for tolerating my urgency to arrive and prepare for my trip. It was
wonderful to see all the family too!! I Love you all! I love you
Cedar! Enjoy the Photos of our success!

Back from Bali for over 3 weeks and its seems like three days. Took a week and a half just to get back in the swing of things...luckly its full blown summer in Seattle....Not really an incentive to get back in the studio but we all have to work at some point.

While I was in Bali I managed to get one post up but after that I found it hard to find the time to post any more.....between scuba diving, trying to surf, shooting photos of villas (and everything else), hanging out with new friends plus 10 days with Kris and Dan, and downing countless Bintangs, who has the time to sit at a computer and blog away..... but now that is going to change. Between current posts I will be providing you all with little ditty's about life in Bali. So enjoy....I plan to convince some to move there. Who knows...you may soon have a friend in Bali too.

Saw it as a sign that this may be my version of living. This Manta Ray came over to say hi 30 seconds into my first fun dive out of my Open Water diving certification course. Throughout the trip I logged 13 dives and I am now an Advanced Open Water diver. Next goal: Master Diver. More photos to come. asaw. -P

Having a great time.

Welcome to Canggu, Bali the town were I am staying and home to Stefan Hoffman and Spacecraft Clothing. Stefans house is situated on the hill in Canggu in the middle of some rice fields. The house is small yet designed in the true balinese style complete with a lush courtyard, outdoor shower, big windows, and amazing furniture. The town is quaint and very authentic and the people are extremely friendly. Everyone always smiles and goes out of their way to say hello.

From the house we go to Dojo studios, which is Spacecraft's Bali HQ.......closer to the beach with a view of the ocean. This is where Spacecraft designs all the new stuff for the coming year and organizes production for the current one. We spend a good part of the day here but I will be getting out a lot more as I get acclimated starting tomorrow. Last night was the first night in 5 days I was able to sleep 8hrs straight due to jet lag. We have a cook at the office and we eat amazing breakfast and lunch everyday. There is a maid at the house too. We come home every night to a made bed and clean house.

In the evening we usually eat at The Beach House or Cafe Dian. We are good friends with Wyann the owner of Cafe Dian and he has let us keep our stuff there while we surf and gives us bug spray for the mosquitos...they come out for only an hour at sunset then they disappear. Wyann and his family are great people and they take care of us so I try to eat more there than The Beach House because of his hospitality. We can eat and drink each night for under 6 bucks.....great food too...real fresh. Lots of watermelon juice!!! We'll sit there and meet new people, watch the waves come in and the people riding them. Sunsets are phenominal!!

I could look at this every day for the rest of my life....you?

Stuck in Taipei

Well I have no choice but to stay in the airport for 10 friggin hours. Been able to keep myself busy though....trying to pay attention to all the mandarin characters and figure out what they mean...interesting people watching. Feeling kind of guilty ordering a mocha from starbucks. I can't get on with my computer...if I could I'd send photos of this place. Pretty cool architecture. After the 12.5 hr flight it seemed like night to me here but it was actually 7:30 in the morning. Going to go rent a room for 3 hours to get a little sleep and grab a shower...just met some guys from utah who are making their way to Koh phangan for this months full moon party in Thialand...told em to stay away from the girlie boys. 6 more hours here then 6 hours on the plane....beat. I guess I can't complain too much. Talk to ya from Bali!!

Getting ready for Bali

Well I finally confirmed my ticket, and I am off to Bali May 11th thru june 22th. I'll be using this to keep friends, family, clients, etc, up to date on my travels and adventures in southeast Asia. I fly from Seattle to Taipei where I spend 10 hours on layover....I may venture out a bit but I don't want to venture too far. I may save that for the trip back when I spend 18 hours over night there. From Taipei I fly right to Denpasar, Bali. Yes!

The trip could follow a couple diferent pathways but which way to go, I won't know till I get there....all I know is I arrive in Bali May 12 in the evening where I will meet up with my good friend Stefan....you will have the opportunity to meet him in future travel posts. He lives in a town named canngu...pronounced chang - gu....where he has a house away from the coast. His office overlooks the surf breaks and beaches of canngu. I will be staying in his house and I guess I have my own room for my time there....Sweet!! The first day I will get a motorbike in line for my travels around the island and after that....well....you'll just have to keep checking. The only thing scheduled is my PADI openwater diving certification and that happens on May 23rd thu May 26th....eventually I will get my Master Diver cert (who knows...maybe more) but with my openwater I can fun dive anywhere in the world. Stoked!

This will be one the biggest solo trips I have taken in my life. My camera will be my partner. This is the beginning of a new lifestyle for me as travel and seeing new places and meeting new people has been an ever present passion of mine. Until now I feel I have never allowed myself the time and / or had the courage to escape, take some time for myself and wrap my arms around my passions that have lied within my heart for so long.

I just have a few more shoots and projects to finish up before I leave, I have to buy a pair of thongs (flip flops not banana hammicks ;-)) and travel size deoderant, a point and shoot digital camera and a housing for that camera. I plan to bring my camera bag, my computer bag and one more check bag with my tripod and minimal clothing. My next post will be from Bali so Ciao for now and see you in Bali!!

This is my first blog....I would like to use this as a tool for Seattle area photographers to comunicate....share Ideas...rant and rave and overall help each other make it happen. My name is Pat Wright....AKA Patrick Lennox Wright.....and this is my blog.....Welcome!

I started my fist post with a photo of Seattle beacause every now and then I have to sit back and realize what an amazing city we live in and what endless opportunities this city provides photographically. Everyone always complains about the gray skies and the rain....whatever. You knew that before you moved here....most of you moved here from somewhere else right, I did.....more chat later I need to go fire up my sump pump. Not a very strong first post but a strong beginning to new community portal.
